The Syrian regime has not left any weapon unused against its people, whether by land or by air. However, the most dangerous weapon the regime is striving to acquire and develop on Syrian soil, given current circumstances and the fast-moving data, is the religious, sectarian, denominational, and ethnic weapon. This is clearly seen in areas where populations are intermingled\u2014Arabs and Kurds, Arabs and Circassians, Arabs and Armenians, Muslims and Christians, Sunnis and Shiites, Sunnis and Ismailis, or Sunnis and Druze, or any majority and minority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To achieve its ends, the regime has, over decades of its rule, planted loyalists whose aim and purpose are to inflame the fires of sedition and bring forth the demon of discord and division. This is what we see today in the undermining of trust and shared decent life between Muslims and our Christian brethren in the historic city of Maaloula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city of Maaloula is resistant to Assad\u2019s regime’s plans, and religious strife will not find a cave in the mountains of Maaloula to inhabit, nor will the fire of sectarianism find a home in which to ignite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We denounce anyone who points accusatory fingers at the Free Syrian Army and its members by sowing seeds of hostility between Muslims and Christians. We are surprised by the statements of Gebran Bassil and President Amine Gemayel in Lebanon yesterday, as his words implicitly exonerated the regime while attributing the events on the ground to elements of the Free Syrian Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We call on our people in the city of Maaloula to possess the necessary resilience during this critical phase of the Syrian revolution\u2019s history, and let everyone know that \u201cSyria is for all Syrians, Muslims and Christians alike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
