The Honored No. (36) Ahmed Barqawi

  • Ahmed Naseem Abdullah Ahmed Barqawi was born on April 29, 1950, in the town of Al-Hamah, west of Damascus, to a Palestinian family from the city of Tulkarm.
  • His family had initially traveled to Syria intending to stay temporarily until the 1948 war ended, but they ultimately became refugees.
  • He lived in Damascus and studied at its university.
  • In 1980, he obtained a master’s degree, followed by a doctorate in philosophy from Saint Petersburg University in Russia.
  • He worked as a lecturer at Damascus University before being officially appointed for two and a half years.
  • In 1983, he became a member of the university’s teaching staff.
  • He served as the head of the Philosophy Department from 1995 to 1999 and held the rank of professor.
  • He taught and lectured at several Syrian and Arab universities.
  • He participated in dozens of philosophical conferences and symposiums.
  • He has written articles and studies for several Arab newspapers and magazines and had a weekly column in the official Syrian newspaper, Al-Thawra.
  • In 2011, he took part in the Syrian events, standing with the Syrian people’s revolution—a people whose citizenship he had long wished to obtain after being born on Syrian soil and having a natural sense of belonging to it.
  • On April 9, 2014, a decision was issued by then-Syrian Prime Minister Wael Al-Halqi to dismiss him from the university and deprive him of his retirement benefits.
  • After facing increasing restrictions, he traveled to the Gulf and settled in Dubai, where he became the Dean of the House of Philosophy.
  • He has authored nearly twenty philosophical works, including The Socratic Lesson and Ontology of the Self, as well as several poetry collections, the most famous being The I.

As the Syrian Future Movement, and in recognition of his intellectual and philosophical legacy, his stance alongside the Syrian people in their revolution against oppression and tyranny, and our appreciation for Syria’s great figures and prominent individuals, we are honored to present the Syrian Future Movement Shield this week to the Syrian-Palestinian philosopher Ahmed Barqawi.

This symbolic Syrian shield embodies our vision and inclusive national approach.

We call on the new Syrian state to grant him the legal Syrian citizenship he has carried by birth and belonging.

The Syrian Future Movement will soon submit an official telegram to the Syrian presidency regarding this matter.
